Nera First To Get Inmarsat BGAN Satellite Terminal Ready For Market
Nera SatCom receives Inmarsat Type Approval for the world's smallest mobile broadband satellite terminal, the Nera WorldPro 1000, and is now ready for commercial launch as the first BGAN terminal supplier.
Oslo, December 1, 2005 - Nera SatCom AS today announced that they have received Type Approval of their Inmarsat BGAN terminal, certifying that the Nera WorldPro 1000 is ready for commercial launch.
Inmarsat's Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) is the world's first mobile communications service providing simultaneous global voice and broadband data speeds up to half a megabit per second. For the first time, it will be possible to use applications such as videoconferencing, IP streaming, internet and email at broadband speeds across the globe from a truly mobile device.
The service is due to be introduced by Inmarsat by early December this year. Nera's Type Approval from Inmarsat was granted on 29th November and follows successful tests by Beta-customers around the world.
The world's smallest mobile broadband satellite terminal
The Nera WorldPro 1000 is the smallest and lightest of all BGAN terminals, weighing less than one kilogram, and also features a unique degree of flexibility.
Mr. Stig-Are Mogstad, President and CEO, Nera SatCom, comments:
"Bringing broadband to mobile users, we have focussed a lot on size and user friendliness. Our terminal fits in the outer pocket of a computer bag, has a detachable antenna that allows for indoor use, and can be supplied with a customized handset that allows you to send and receive text messages and get high quality voice while being online. You can even get the terminal in different colours."
Nera has already started shipping the first terminals to customers and has a significant order backlog of the new Nera WorldPro 1000 from distributors around the world, indicating strong market demand.
"We have looked forward to this milestone since we started development of the terminal over three years ago, and we are proud to be the very first manufacturer to have a commercially ready terminal", concludes Mr. Mogstad.
